The Remarkable Women of the Ancient World

This category will contain a series of articles on women of the ancient world. However, the approach will not be a story of women’s lives and statuses, their dress, or education in different civilisations. Rather, I shall each week post a profile of a different woman, looking at why they were esteemed, feared, or condemned in their societies. Noteworthy is perhaps a better word than remarkable. Why were these women considered worthy of comment, positive or negative? The masculine lens through which our views of most women have been transmitted is a filter we shall have, in some cases, to try and get past. Some women, I shall argue, may have been given an unfair press.
